Girls Play Sports (GPS) is a non-profit (501c3) organization dedicated to building leadership skills and confidence in girls through their participation in a wide variety of sports. GPS offers this program for communities/high schools to help introduce girls to a wide variety of sports, provide them with role models and emphasize pride in being a female athlete.
Eight monthly multi-sport units spread across twenty-four Sunday training nights are conducted at Evanston Township High School (and Classic Bowl of Morton Grove and Canal Shores Golf Course in Evanston). Last year, Team GPS taught almost one hundred (100) 6th – 8th grade girls.
As follow-up to the Girls Play Sports Festival and GPS After School Clinics, Team GPS offers a comprehensive year round opportunity that deepens the exposure and instruction for middle school girls to two new sports each month. Additionally, Team GPS engages these future leaders in discussion topics about critical topics that face young women today. The goal is to open up their mind to the possibilities that exist in sport while giving them the critical thinking skills to better navigate their future as strong, confident women.
At the Team GPS monthly sessions, high school student-athletes teach the skills and drills while the GPS Director coordinates the discussion topics. A low athlete to instructor ratio will always stay below 6:1. Often times, Northwestern University student-athletes will join in the fun by participating alongside the middle schoolers or teaching the discussion topic lesson for the day such as how to foster stronger relationships/friendships, the pitfalls and opportunities of social media, how to handle bullying, understanding the harmful messages about body image and the psychology of sport. Team GPS also hosts “Adventures in Sports” which provides free or low cost opportunities for girls to attend a variety of sports related events throughout the year such as Northwestern women’s athletic contests, WNBA Sky basketball games and social events like bowling and pool parties.
